ITC students once again help out with busy cruise ship turnarounds

Posted on 23/04/2025 by

ITC students have been shining once again after helping with recent cruise ship turnarounds in Auckland.

ITC students receive an exceptional education in travel and tourism in the classroom – but they also often get even more invaluable training outside of the classroom with work experience opportunities organised by our team.

Recently, and not for the first time, ITC students had the chance to help out with busy cruise ship turnarounds in Auckland.

Working in cruise ship turnarounds

ITC tutor Kirsten also works in turnarounds with Akorn Destinations as their Auckland Terminal Manager. It has been a busy cruise season, with two ‘double ship days’, which meant the company was responsible for turning around a ship on each port – in other words, they needed all hands ‘on deck’.

Kirsten put the call out to ITC students, asking if anyone wanted real-world experience in this fast-paced, exciting industry.

As always, many ITC students rose to the occasion! As well as all the normal turnaround roles such as check-in, several students were also especially chosen to work at the airport in a meet-and-greet role, and in hotels on the cruise hospitality desk.

“This gave them experience beyond the wharf turnarounds which is amazing to put on their CVs,” explained Kirsten.

“We did twice the number of turns this season from last, which shows the industry is bouncing back. They have asked me to be Terminal Manager again next season, so there will be more opportunities for this year’s students (and graduates as well).”

ITC students and real-world experience

Cruise ship turnarounds is just one example of ITC students getting access to real-world work experience.

We recently had some students spend time volunteering at the Brand USA Agent Expo, and another group worked at the Armageddon Expo last year.

At minimum, these students gain valuable experience in the industry, and learn first-hand just how diverse the industry is and how many roles are available. Often, students walk away with industry contacts, which can turn into job offers once they graduate!
