Graduate career profiles
More than 3,750 students have graduated from The International Travel College during the past 21 years! The majority are now working in the industry, both in New Zealand and overseas. Many are moving up the ladder of success towards their career goals having been promoted to senior positions. You’ll see that ITC graduates are in continued demand by industry employers!
We ask our students lots of questions when they leave, these are just a few of the answers. In each campus many of these student profiles are displayed, so you read about their experiences in their words, not ours!
Jayde Morris, Junior Travel Agent, Harvey World Travel
Working as a travel agent at Harvey World Travel is a dream come true for ITC graduate Jayde Morris.
What do you love about your job?
I get to travel around the world for educational purposes and I work with a great team. It can be a very stressful and demanding job but you get to plan a dream holiday for people and hear all about what a fantastic time they had when away. Knowing that you had something to do with that is pretty special.
What skills did you gain from studying at ITC that you use every day in your job?
I learnt people skills, the different booking systems used in the travel industry and I gained confidence having to speak in front of new people.
Anything else you want to let us know?
ITC will help you get your first job. Impress the tutors and staff and they will do everything they can to get you that first job!
Rodelyn Aponte, Customer Service Representative, Fullers
Rodelyn is an international student from the Philippines and recently completed our 2 year International Diploma.
What are the highs and lows of your job?
The highs would definitely be meeting new people from around the world, people hopping off the cruise ships, which makes the job very interesting – knowing bits of their culture and sharing what Auckland has to offer. Also, it is great to make friends with the commuters. I can’t think of any lows of my jobs, everything is just perfect!
What skills have you gained from studying with ITC that you use everyday in your job?
ITC taught me the importance of customer service which is the most important thing in the travel and tourism industry.
What advice could you give to future international students of ITC?
If you are studying at ITC, you’re in good hands. Good communication with the people around the College will really help overcome various issues you might have being an international student – everyone is more than happy to help you! Be committed to what you are doing and everything will definitely be perfect!
Sarah Whalen, Flight Redemption Consultant, American Express
Sarah Whalen knew she wanted to work in travel and tourism when she first went on a plane. Now she has landed a job at American Express.
What are the highs and lows of your job?
Only highs with this job. The hours I work are brilliant and there are many opportunities for promotion. I speak to customers every day about their trips and I can hear the excitement in their voices.
What skills did you gain from studying at ITC that you use every day in your job?
Learning the basics of making flight bookings and everything to do with customer service.
Any advice for current ITC students?
Take advantage of the role plays you do, it really helps. I never thought I’d use what I learned but I do every day! Always hand in your assessments on time. You may think wearing corporate wear every day at college is silly but it really does prepare you for what to wear in interviews and working in the industry.
Mitch Tuitupou, Night Audit/Receptionist, Nomads Fat Camel
Since graduating from ITC Mitch is working for one of Auckland’s most popular backpackers.
What do you like about your job?
The atmosphere at the Camel, great workmates and also I get to meet new friends from all around the world.
What could this job lead to?
Working in any of our other hostels in New Zealand, Australia or Fiji. Moving up the ladder into management.
Do you have any advice for current students at ITC?
Do all the work that is required and do it on time. Don’t leave work until the last minute.

I want to thank everyone at ITC for giving me this opportunity and will never forget you guys. It’s been a pleasure and will always remember my time there.
Erin Hornsby, Receptionist, YHA International
Originally from Malborough, Erin recently graduated from ITC and is now working in reception at one of Auckland’s leading youth hostels.
What advice could you give to future graduates of ITC?
Stay on task at all times but also have fun whilst doing so. Take all the advice that is constantly offered by your tutors. They are always happy to help you so just ask and you never know when you may need it.
What skills did you gain from studying with ITC that you use everyday in your job?
The administration skills because I am constantly responding to emails and making bookings. Knowing where places are and countries are located has helped me deal with our international customers.
Some Do's and Don'ts advice for current students at ITC?
Always make time for your assessments because they are so important in completing your work. Don’t get lazy and let your work fall back because it is easy to fall behind in your work. Hand in things early!
