What are some of the travel and tourism jobs you could do with a qualification from ITC?

ITC graduate Lynelle is working in cabin crew – just one of the amazing jobs available in travel and tourism!
Travel and tourism is one of the biggest industries in New Zealand, and the world. And there are so many more roles you could take than most people even realise.
Part of our job at ITC isn’t just to give you an industry-recognised qualification, but also to show our students the huge variety of jobs out there. This is often how our students learn about the different possibilities – and how they discover exactly what it is they want to do with their careers.
Without further ado, here are 9 of the best travel and tourism jobs you could try!
Travel blogger
Even in a world of AI, travel bloggers will always have a place. After all, AI can’t go and experience a new activity, fly on a new airline, or explain just how exceptional the pasta is at that little restaurant in Milan.
This job requires a huge passion for travel, as well as the writing chops to share it in a way that connects to audiences around the world.
Tourism sustainability manager
Is your passion for travel matched only by your passion for the environment?
As more and more people demand eco-friendly tourism options, roles are becoming available for those who can help to improve the sustainability of a place or a tourism operation. You would need skills and experience in both tourism and sustainability to work your way into one of these roles.
Tour guide
Becoming a tour guide is a hugely popular option for ITC graduates, and with so many fantastic attractions and tours in New Zealand, there’s certainly also plenty of demand for these kinds of professionals.
Tour guides have to know about the tour or destination they’re showcasing, but they also must have great people skills to talk to those from all over the world, and to make them feel welcome.
Tourism tutor
What about sharing your travel and tourism knowledge with the next generation?
Our team of tutors at ITC aren’t just teachers – they are also passionate and experienced travel and tourism workers. It’s a big part of what makes learning at ITC so special, as everyone on the team has come from their own history with the industry, so you’re learning from people who truly know how it all works.
In fact, we even have graduates on the team! Laura is a tutor, and Sam is our Botany Campus Manager & Course Advisor!
Destination marketer
Many people who love tourism end up working at DMOs, or Destination Marketing Organisations.
DMOs exist to market a place, ensuring a steady stream of visitors all year round to drive revenue for local businesses and support the economy. Major cities and tourism hotspots will all have a DMO, which means there are plenty of jobs to go around.
These jobs include everything from data analytics, to research, blogging, social media, and newsletter marketing.
Travel agent
Do you love to travel, then to turn around and help everyone else experience the same amazing things you have?
A travel agent is a great job for anyone who loves travel, helping people, and being extremely organised. You’ll help to make bookings, craft itineraries, and set up travellers for success on their adventures all over the world.
Some travel agents are dedicated to specific types of trips, such as ski holidays, so you may even find a role that’s specifically suited to your own interests.
Au Pair
Do you love kids and exploring the world?
An Au pair is a great role for someone who’s wonderful with kids. Typically, you will take on a lot of the day-to-day childcare for a family, and help out with housework and other tasks. In return, you’ll live in a room in their house, and get paid. Many families will even take their au pairs on holiday with them when they travel, so you might get to travel as part of your job!
This is a great way for you to stay in different places around the world and see the sights, all while getting accommodation included as part of your work.
Cruise ship worker
People who work on cruise ships travel the world as part of their jobs. You’ll live and work on the ships, meeting people from all over the planet and helping them make the most of their holidays.
You will be able to get off the ship in some ports and spend time exploring new cities, and you’ll work with an incredible group of people.
There are a lot of different jobs available on cruise ships, from food and beverage workers to stage performers, photographers, cleaners, and customer service roles.
Flight attendant
Of course, arguably the most popular option for ITC graduates is to become a flight attendant.
These glamorous roles take you to places all over New Zealand and the world, giving you short stops in different cities where you can explore, meet people, and try different amazing dishes everywhere you go.
Our New Zealand Certificate in Tourism with a strand in Aviation Level 3 is a great option for anyone looking to become a flight attendant.
