ITC to run FIVE Tourism Academies in 2023
One of the great things about ITC is that we don’t just offer tourism and travel credits for those who have finished high school. In fact, our Business of Tourism Academy offers Year 12 and 13 students in Auckland and Whangarei the chance to earn up to 30 level 3 credits throughout their school year.
And the best part is, we’ll be offering FIVE opportunities to join our Business of Tourism Academy in 2023.
What is the Business of Tourism Academy?
This Tourism Academy has been designed especially for senior high school students. It requires just one day per week over 30 weeks, and teaches tourism from a business perspective.
By taking this course, students can learn a lot about what it might be like to work in travel and tourism as a lifelong career.
During the academy, students will meet industry leaders face to face during a number of different site visits and activities. These activities will cover a range of sectors to give students and idea of the variety of roles and careers available in travel and tourism.
Our focus is on teaching extremely valuable skills such as cultural awareness, communication, leadership, presentation skills, enterprise and marketing, public speaking, and customer service. These skills are all highly prized in travel and tourism, but even if students end up in a different career, they are skills that will serve them well no matter where they go.
Not to mention, with our small class sizes, passionate and experienced tutors, and extremely supportive environment, all of this learning barely feels like studying at all. It’s fun and interesting every step of the way, and students often become good friends throughout the course.
Hear it from Business of Tourism Academy tutor Michelle
Michelle Newsome is one of ITC’s wonderful Tourism Educators, and the tutor for the Business of Tourism Academy.
To give potential future students a little insight into what the course is like, we asked her how the 2022 year has been at the academy.
“Our 2022 Tourism Academy has been such a wonderful part of our year in the Schools Team at ITC. This is the first year we’ve had two Tourism Academies – one at each of our Auckland Campuses. It’s been absolutely amazing getting to know the students and seeing them grow in confidence and knowledge, as well as make some great friends along the way.”
“We’ve had some total highlights, fears conquered by bungy jumping off bridges and towers, having a laugh at the Weta Unleashed and All Blacks experience and even heading behind the scenes at the AirNZ training centre and Cordis Hotel.”
“I know that the units we looked at have given the students some real transferrable skills which can be used to open up the right doors to get into the tourism industry. It’s so awesome to see students realise that their dreams of working in tourism are really achievable now they have had the chance to complete this course and see the incredible possibilities that are out there within the tourism industry.”
“I can’t wait to meet the students we have enrolled for this academy in 2023 and follow the successes of our students of 2022.”
