The ITC Business of Tourism Academy: A fantastic option for high schools in 2022
In 2022, ITC is pairing up with the Te Arataki Ki Te Uru Trades Academy to offer a Business of Tourism Academy for high school students in Auckland.
This fantastic course option will give students the opportunity to learn about tourism from a business point of view, with a real focus on the entrepreneurial side of things that Kiwis are so famous for.
Courses will be available at level two and level three, ensuring learners can make a start in the industry at either level. Additionally, these courses cover a range of sectors in the industry, including adventure tourism, airline and airports, accommodation, activities, attractions and many more.
This is the course option for anyone considering a robust career in tourism and tourism management in the future.
Here’s a little more about what’s on offer in 2022:
Level 2 Business of Tourism Academy
The level 2 academy is a quick eight-day course with the option to begin in term two or three.
It covers entry level skills that are vital when entering into employment, and includes interactive activities on campus, a site visit, and the opportunity to meet industry experts.
Students will also have the option to take this level 2 academy as part of a larger year-long ‘Trades Taster’ course.
Level 3 Business of Tourism Academy
The level 3 academy involves one day of learning every Friday from 9am to 3pm at the ITC campus for 30 weeks, and offers students 30 credits at level 3. This course begins on February 25 and runs through until the end of October.
This course is about far more than classroom learning. Students will meet employers in the industry face to face and enjoy a variety of site visits and activities, gaining hands-on experience and creating industry connections. They will learn about cultural awareness, marketing, customer service, communication, public speaking, presentation skills, and leadership, all of which will be highly useful in tourism and travel, as well as a range of other industries.
ITC’s involvement
ITC’s own Ceri Jenkins has been heavily involved with getting the Business of Tourism Academy off the ground this year. He explained why the academy is so important for up-and-coming students in the industry:
“I know many people who now work in tourism wish there was something available like this for them when they were in school. It would have provided the exact pathway they were looking for and really opened their eyes to management and business ownership within tourism.”
Daniel had this to say about the 2021 Business of Tourism Academy class:
“Class of 2021 students have learnt exciting opportunities within our awesome Tourism industry. Every Friday, they reconnect with new friends and immerse into the fun and challenging activities, modules and field trips relevant to Tourism, Travel & Aviation jobs. Through immersive training students have gained confidence, transferable skills and quality training from ITC’s vert own industry trained professionals. Ready for a bungy jump? Get in touch!”
Sarah Rouse added:
“The Tourism Academy of 2021 has been a fantastic addition to the ITC Schools team. The students are able to experience campus life at a Tertiary level, expanding their Product Knowledge of the Tourism Industry in a fun, interactive way. Daniel and myself are available and use a hands on, friendly approach to our students, who have become like family to us, calling or texting for guidance or sometimes just to say hi. Tourism is a busy industry to be a part of but, Daniel, myself and the students all look forward to seeing each other again on Friday.”
