Kiwi Link India strengthens tourism relations in Mumbai

Kiwi Link India, an annual trade event organised by Tourism New Zealand, has just taken place in Mumbai (July 11-13). The purpose of the event is to create and strengthen tourism relationships between trade operators in New Zealand and overseas travel agents, planners and product managers.

Over 30 New Zealand tourism operators attended the event, and met with 80 Indian delegates over the weekend.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive, Kevin Bowler, explains why events such as this are so important.

“Having a well-informed travel trade is critical to converting interest into bookings. This event provides an ideal platform for us to strengthen relations with our stakeholders in the Indian travel trade, supporting their ability to sell travel to New Zealand, particularly during the shoulder seasons.”

ITC International Marketing Manager Lesley Brough shares highlights from her recent work trip to Thailand and South Korea.

Lesley Brough is ITC’s International Marketing Manager. Every few months, she travels overseas to promote the College, meet with agents and potential students, and attend education events.

While these trips are for work, she does get the opportunity to see some pretty amazing places (all in the name of business).

Below, she shares some highlights from her most recent trip to South Korea and Thailand.

South Korea

I spent a week in South Korea meeting with agents (organisations that help people study overseas). I stayed in Seoul for three nights, before taking the high-speed train to Busan.

Here are a few snaps from my meetings:

Air New Zealand wins International Airline of the Year award

Air New Zealand won both International Airline of the Year and Domestic Airline of the Year at the Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards 2016.

More than 13,000 New Zealanders gave their opinion on brands and companies, which led to 21 businesses being awarded on the night. Air New Zealand was the only company to win two titles, continuing “its streak as the top domestic airline”.

Carrie Hurihanganui, the general manager for customer experience at Air New Zealand, says it’s great to see the airline’s efforts are being recognised by its customers.

“We have been very focused on enhancing our customers’ journeys, including making substantial investments in new aircraft, new and refreshed lounges, and innovative technology,” she explained.

Introducing Daniel Maine

ITC’s new short course tutor, Daniel Maine, enjoying a holiday in Paris. His travel and tourism career has taken him all around the world!

Daniel Maine recently joined the ITC Tourism Education Team as a short course tutor. Below he tells us a little bit about his career to-date, and his healthy travel obsession.

Travel, food, fashion, wine, culture and history are some of my greatest passions, and the reasons why I travel the world. Once I graduated with IATA/UFTAA and Travel & Tourism diplomas, I briefly moved abroad. I love travelling so can never get enough, and without hesitation I would pack my bags when an occasion arises. Luckily, I was able to visit my most favourite and exotic places that I once hung posters of in my room.

Returning to NZ I decided to pursue what I had studied for and successfully started my career with our national carrier, Air New Zealand. For the next 10 years I gained so much experience as a Senior Customer Services Agent in every aspect of airport life, from Check-In to Airport Operational roles. I enjoyed meeting new people, made great long lasting friendships, and am a proud Air New Zealander.

Date announced for 2016 Graduation Ceremony

Proud ITC graduates with their certificates from last year’s Graduation Ceremony.

It’s that time of the year again – graduation time! The date has been set for ITC Graduation 2016.

Date: Friday August 5
Time: 7.00pm to 10.00pm
Location: The Great Room, The Langham Hotel

The theme for this year is ‘1920s’ – a throwback to the Great Gatsby era (think flappers, feather boas and intricate head bands). However, the 1920’s theme has an even deeper meaning – this year, ITC is celebrating its 20th birthday.

“2016 is a big year for ITC. It marks 20 years since the College opened its doors and started educating students about aviation, travel and tourism. Graduation is always a special event, but this year will be extra special,” says Managing Director Kerry Priestley.

New Zealand’s tourism boom continues

New Zealand’s growing tourism industry has been making headlines for months, and May managed to top the charts again – records for both short-term visits and migration have once more been broken.

According to Statistics New Zealand, the overall annual migration to New Zealand rose to 68,400 in May – up from 57,800 a year earlier. The number of short-term visitor arrivals from overseas shot up to 3.29 million, which is 11 per cent more than the same time last year.

Further to this, the Treasury is expecting migration levels will reach their peak in June – at 70,700 – before returning to normal levels again in another three years.

Historically, Australia has been the number one country of origin for visitors to New Zealand, but recent figures have shown that 22,200 people came from China through May, compared to 20,200 Australians. This is only the second time China has managed to supersede Australia’s figures.

ITC Tourism Education Team Leader Mel Fey strikes a pose on her trek up to Everest Base Camp.

ITC Tourism Education Team Leader Mel Fey recently ran the Everest Marathon in Nepal; a 42.2km high-altitude run from Base Camp to Namche Bazaar. Below, she shares three life lessons she learned during this incredible, challenging, life-changing experience.

1. You’re always capable of more than you think you are

You read stories all the time of amazing people who, sometimes against all odds, achieve amazing goals. And you might think, “Oh, but I couldn’t do that…”

I’m here to tell you that you can. Don’t sell yourself short. You can achieve anything you want to. You cannot possibly just sit and wait for the impossible to happen without a little hard work.  I always say ‘you cannot make diamonds without a little pressure’.  You need to prepare, work hard or train and participate.

You may not win the race like me but you certainly win in achieving the goals of your dreams.
