The world is starting to open up. Here’s an update on what’s happening around the world in travel and tourism.
Here in New Zealand we’re working on getting our vaccine numbers up before really relaunching travel and more ease of movement, but overseas the travel and tourism industry is already heating up.
Thanks to increased vaccination rates and measures such as vaccine passports on planes, more and more countries have been able to open up for travel, and there are countless new headlines about this travel boom every single day.
With travel being so popular and airlines operating at higher levels, it has meant that incredible employment opportunities are becoming available worldwide.
Here are a select few to keep you updated.
Family travel starts making a comeback
In many places around the world, travel has been open for the vaccinated for several months. However, while children under the age of 12 were unable to be vaccinated, this made things tough for parents wanting to head away on family holidays.
Now that the vaccine has been approved for 5-12s, family travel is making a comeback.
The Airbus A380s are taking off once again
Early in the pandemic, airlines halted the use of their Airbus A380s. These planes are the world’s largest passenger airliners, and typically seat up to 525 passengers.
Recently, several airlines have started putting these planes back in the sky as travel demand picks up once again. Qatar Airways have already begun, and will be joined by Singapore Airlines and Qantas.
Asia-Pacific starts opening up
Much like New Zealand, both Singapore and Malaysia aimed to completely eliminate the virus, but eventually found covid-19 in their communities. Yet with vaccines, both countries and others around Asia-Pacific have started to create pathways for travel to reboot their economies.
Vaccinated visitors from 11 countries can now travel to Singapore without needing to quarantine, and Malaysia has reopened for domestic tourism. Similarly, Thailand and Indonesia have begun easing restrictions, and of course, vaccinated Australians can also now travel home without quarantine.
Travel stocks start picking up
The stock market is always a good indicator of how well an industry or company is doing, and travel companies are seeing stocks pick up across the board. From airlines to booking websites and even Airbnb, the stock market is reflecting the recovery of the industry itself.
The CEO of Expedia, Peter Kern, said it best after the company enjoyed a massive 97% growth in revenue: “Cities are picking up. International has picked up. Virtually every area has seen growth.”
The USA reopens to Canada and Mexico
Just this week, the USA is reopening its borders to vaccinated travellers from Canada and Mexico. The borders shut at the start of the pandemic, and while travellers could fly into the country, they could not cross by land.
And unlike flights, those coming by land will not have to provide a negative PCR test, making it that much easier and more affordable for travellers looking to visit their neighbours.
Reconnecting New Zealand with the world
Here in New Zealand, we’re excitedly waiting for our own country to open up safely so we can reconnect with the world. And the good news is that there are positive signs on the horizon.
Not only is the country’s vaccine rollout going very well and nudging us into the top countries worldwide for vaccines, the government has already announced shorter MIQ stays of 7 days (replacing the full 14 days), and suggested that it will move to a home isolation model sometime between January and April in 2022.
