Want to work on superyachts? Check out our tips to get started!
Working on a superyacht sounds like the career that people only have in movies and television shows. But for anyone serious about a career in travel and tourism – it’s actually a realistic possibility.
Just ask Charlotte Roberts-Swain, an ITC graduate who has been working on superyachts for the past decade!
Here are some of the top tips to keep in mind if you’re looking to follow in her footsteps.
- Get as qualified as possible
Working on a superyacht might look like it’s all fun, but these crews are highly trained in a number of areas.
Legally, you’ll need at least:
- Stcw95 First Aid
- Stcw95 Sea Survival
- Stcw95 Personal Roles And Responsibilities (PRR)
- Stcw95 Fire Fighting
These courses are all designed to meet international standards, so they are applicable anywhere in the world.
It’s also highly recommended to get a Tender Driver’s Licence, a Jet Ski Driver’s Licence, and a Radio Communication Licence. These course are not essential, but all are hugely beneficial to have as they will all certainly come in handy when working on a superyacht.
These courses are all skill specific, so if you’d like to start with a more general base of knowledge for travel and tourism, you can begin right here at ITC!
- Keep in touch with your tutors
This piece of advice is straight from Charlotte herself.
She says that after you graduate, you might feel like you’re now going it alone. However, the tutors at ITC will always be there to support you, whether that’s through helping you update your CV, job hunting, or simply chatting about the opportunities and challenges ahead of you.
- Know when and where to job hunt for a superyacht role
You wouldn’t look to find work on a superyacht in New Zealand in the middle of July – and the same is true for jobs around the world. Typically, jobs are lined up in spring or early summer.
For roles in the Mediterranean, it’s best to look from late April through to October (although it’s best to search in April). For jobs in the Caribbean, head to the main ports from October onwards.
- Sign up with superyacht agencies
There are dedicated job agencies for those seeking work on superyachts.
You can sign up with them online, then follow them on socials and engage with them as much as possible to get your name out there.
These agencies include The Crew Network, YPI Crew, and MYS Superyacht Crew.
- Get your paperwork in order
Just like with any trip overseas, you’ll need good travel insurance in case something goes wrong. And just like any work overseas, you’ll need the appropriate work visa for the country or countries you’re visiting.
Be sure to spend time researching these factors ahead of time so you can be ready to work when the opportunity arises.
Whether you’re looking to work on superyachts or head somewhere else in the industry, ITC is a great place to start with our range of foundational travel and tourism courses.
