Meet the international student who says ITC makes Monday mornings feel exciting!

Ladelle James is an international student from South Africa studying with ITC – and loving it!
ITC is a wonderful college for international students, not just because of the world class qualifications you can earn here, but the welcoming environment that will help make everyone feel at home – even when they’re far from it.
We currently have nine international students studying with us, including Ladelle James, from South Africa. Ladelle recently sent us this quote:
“Every single day at ITC thus far has felt like stepping into a mini adventure, full of learning, laughter and the kind of people who make even Monday mornings feel exciting! and this is coming from a guy who doesn’t like Mondays. Coming here as an international student wasn’t just a choice, it was a milestone in my life—and honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for all the in-flight snacks in the world.”
Of course, we wanted to interview him and learn more! Here’s what he had to share.
Where have you travelled from or what does your journey look like so far moving to NZ?
I came all the way from sunny South Africa—where opportunities like this feel more like a dream than something you can actually hold. Moving to New Zealand was a huge leap, but one I’ll always be proud of. It’s been a mix of excitement, culture shock, and figuring out how to cross the street without dodging taxis!
What made you choose ITC as your NZ-based education provider?
I chose ITC because it wasn’t just another school—it felt like a place that actually cared. The team was warm from the start (I mean, emails that made me feel welcome? That’s rare!). I also loved that it’s focused on travel, tourism, and aviation—industries that spark real passion in me.
What do you want to use your qualification for?
I want to take this qualification and launch a career that lets me combine two things I love: helping people and travelling. Whether that’s working at an airport, in tourism, or even running my own little travel company one day—I want to be that person who makes people’s journeys feel as magical as mine has been so far.
What are some standout moments so far you’ve experienced at ITC?
Every time we had practical activities, team days, or even casual class chats—it felt like I was exactly where I belonged. Honestly, even the classroom banter and seeing tutors get excited about our future careers has been memorable.
How has ITC supported you as an international student?
ITC has been my home away from home. They’ve supported me not just academically, but emotionally too. They check in, they help when you’re overwhelmed, and they make sure you know you belong here—even when you miss home or can’t find the right brand of peanut butter at the supermarket.
What advice do you have for anyone from overseas looking to study in NZ?
Do it. Seriously. If you’re coming from a place like South Africa, where opportunities are limited, this can be life-changing. Yes, it’s scary at first. Yes, you’ll miss the food. But you’ll grow in ways you never imagined. Bring an open mind, a thick hoodie (trust me, it gets cold), and just go for it. You won’t regret it.
Make the jump – study in New Zealand with ITC
The team at ITC is incredibly welcoming to international students. Plus, in a place as multi-cultural as Auckland, international students are just as welcomed by their peers – who are often excited to meet and learn about people from other countries.
ITC is also a Signatory to the Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners, so you can enjoy peace of mind that you will be well looked after if you move to New Zealand.
