Meet Sonia Alves Barreto, the International Student studying Level 5 at ITC!

Sonia Alves Barreto visiting Hobbiton.
Sonia Alves Barreto is another of ITC’s incredible international students. These students aren’t just working towards an industry-recognised qualification, but doing it all in a second language after leaving their family and friends behind.
We admire their passion for the industry and dedication to education, and we do everything we can at ITC to support our international students, ensuring they feel welcome and have the tools they need to thrive.
Sonia is from Timor-Leste, and she hopes to one day return to her home country and use her skills to improve tourism there. Her story is an inspiring one, so read on to learn more!
Where are you coming from, or how has the travel experience been so far in relocating to New Zealand?
I came from Timor-Leste, my homeland where I developed my interest in tourism, to New Zealand. I was lucky to receive the Manaaki New Zealand Short-Term Training Scholarship, given by the New Zealand Embassy in Timor-Leste, to study here.
My journey started with a wish to build my skills so I could help grow tourism in my country. It was not an easy choice to leave my family and work behind, but I believed that studying in New Zealand would give me better education and international experience to help me grow both personally and professionally.
What motivated you to choose ITC as your New Zealand educational institution?
I chose the International Travel College of New Zealand (ITC) because it has a very good reputation in tourism and travel training. Since I already had some background in commerce and tourism, I wanted a place that teaches theory but also lets students practice real skills. ITC works closely with the industry, welcomes students from many countries, and is known for supporting international students. These reasons made it the best choice for me.
What is the intended application of your qualification?
I hope to use the knowledge and skills I learn here to help improve tourism in Timor-Leste. My goal is to work with local tourism businesses to develop community-based tourism, create more jobs for young people and women, and make our tourism products and services better and more competitive internationally.
What are some highlights so far at ITC?
One special moment was when we did a travel agency simulation. It helped us understand how Tourism New Zealand and other organizations work together. It made learning more active and fun. Another highlight was ITC Cultural Day. I got to share about Timor-Leste — our food, culture, and traditions with classmates and teachers. It was great to see their interest and curiosity about my country.

How has ITC helped you as an international student?
ITC has made me feel very welcome from my first day. The staff are kind and always ready to help with study questions or personal worries. They understand how hard it can be to live far from home and study in a second language. The teaching style is very interactive, and everyone is treated equally, which makes learning more comfortable and enjoyable.
What do you say to someone abroad who wishes to study in NZ?
If you have the chance to study in New Zealand, go for it! My advice is: don’t be afraid to meet new people and try new things. Ask for help when you need it, New Zealanders and international students are very friendly. Use every chance to learn, inside and outside of class. Keep your own culture close but also be open to learning about others. And most importantly, believe in yourself – you are stronger than you think.
At the moment, I am really enjoying my experience in the Level 5 program at ITC, the subjects are interesting and more detailed, which helps me understand the tourism industry at a deeper level. I like that the lessons mix theory with practical tasks, so we can see how what we learn is used in real life. The group discussions and projects help me improve my communication and teamwork skills, and I enjoy learning from classmates who come from different countries and backgrounds. The teachers are very supportive and encourage us to think critically and share our own ideas. Overall, the Level 5 program is challenging but exciting, and it is helping me grow both professionally and personally.
