Meet an ITC international student from Timor-Leste!

Elzita da Cruz Sarmento is an incredible student from Timor-Leste currently studying with ITC!
Did you know that ITC is known for our reputation for welcoming international students?
As a signatory to the Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners, we are deeply committed to taking extra care of students who leave behind their families and homes to study with us.
One of those students has been the lovely Elzita da Cruz Sarmento, who has come to us from Timor-Leste. Elzita has truly been making the most of her time at ITC and in New Zealand, so we asked her about her amazing journey so far!
Where have you travelled from or what does your journey look like so far moving to NZ?
I travelled from Timor-Leste to New Zealand to pursue my studies in travel and tourism. Moving to a new country was both exciting and challenging, but I’ve grown so much through this experience. It’s my first time living abroad, and every day I’m learning new things, both inside and outside the classroom.
It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I hope my story can encourage others who are thinking about studying in New Zealand.
Why did you choose ITC?
Moreover, I chose ITC because of its strong reputation in the travel and tourism industry and the supportive environment for international students. The practical training, experienced tutors, and focus on real-world skills really stood out to me. Plus, the friendly communication I received even before arriving in NZ made me feel confident in my decision.
What do you hope to use your qualification for?
I want to use my qualification to work in the tourism industry, either as a tour guide, travel consultant, or tourism operator. I’m passionate about sharing the beauty of different cultures and helping others explore new destinations. Eventually, I hope to create my own travel business that connects people with unique experiences, especially between Timor-Leste and New Zealand.
What are some standout moments so far you’ve experienced at ITC?
Two of the most unforgettable moments I’ve experienced at ITC were the school trip to the Marae and the Disney workshop. Firstly, the visit to the Marae was such a powerful cultural experience. It was my first time learning about Māori traditions and language in such a meaningful way. Being welcomed with a pōwhiri and hearing the stories shared with us gave me a deep respect for the Māori culture and its importance in New Zealand society. It made me feel more connected to the country and helped me understand the values of community, hospitality, and identity that are so strong here.
Another moment that really stood out was attending the Disney workshop. It felt like a dream come true to hear directly from a global brand that I’ve always admired. Learning about the opportunities available through Disney and the values they hold in the tourism and hospitality industry was incredibly inspiring. It made me even more passionate about my future career and gave me confidence that I’m on the right path. Both of these experiences reminded me why I chose ITC, not just for the education, but for the unforgettable real-world learning and the chance to grow both personally and professionally.
How has ITC supported you as an international student?
ITC has been incredibly supportive. From helping with offering emotional and academic support, I’ve always felt cared for. The small class sizes mean I can ask questions and get help when I need it. The staff genuinely want to see students succeed, and that means a lot.
What advice do you have for anyone from overseas looking to study in NZ?
My advice is don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Studying in New Zealand is not just about education; it’s about growing as a person. Be open to new cultures, make friends, and ask for help when you need it. And of course, enjoy the journey! New Zealand is a beautiful, safe, and welcoming place to study.
Thank you again for this opportunity to share my story. I hope it inspires others to follow their dreams just as I am following mine.
Are you thinking of studying in New Zealand with ITC?
On top of their studies, international students will be faced with the challenges of moving to a new country and learning a new culture at the same time. We are well aware of just how hard this can be, which is why we work extra hard to help our international students feel welcomed and at home with us.
