Building a Future Through Tourism: Savannah’s Story
From Classroom Dream to Tourism Career: Savannah’s Journey
Some journeys begin with a single step. For Savannah Jackson, her journey into tourism began with a simple school workshop and a dream that would eventually lead her to a career welcoming visitors from around the world.
Today, Savannah works at the iconic Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangārei, but her path to success has been one of determination, passion, and perseverance.
A proud young mum to her son, Savannah has always understood the importance of creating opportunities for a brighter future. Her love for tourism was sparked during her school years when a Flight Attendant visited her classroom to share stories about the travel and tourism industry.
“I remember listening to her talk about the incredible opportunities available and feeling inspired,” Savannah recalls. “From that day, I knew I wanted to be part of an industry that connects people, cultures, and experiences.”
With a clear goal in mind, Savannah carefully chose subjects that would support her future aspirations, including tourism studies and language learning. Her enthusiasm for the industry continued to grow, leading her to join the Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy while she was in Year 12 in 2023.
The academy provided more than just industry knowledge. It gave Savannah confidence, direction, and the belief that her dream was achievable.
One of the most significant influences during her studies was the support of her tutor.
“Having Mel, our Academy Tutor, who genuinely believed in me, encouraged me to push myself, and supported me every step of the way made a huge difference,” she says. “Their confidence in me helped build my own confidence and showed me that I was capable of achieving my goals. I’m grateful for North Tec & ITC to provide this opportunity for me.”
After successfully completing the academy, Savannah continued her journey with ITC, enrolling in the Level 3 and Level 4 Tourism and Travel programmes in Whangārei through the partnership with ITC & North Tec during 2024. These programmes provided valuable industry knowledge, practical experience, and workplace-ready skills that prepared her for a career in tourism.
Among the many lessons she learned, one stands out.
“I learned how to stay calm and effective in fast-paced, high-pressure situations,” Savannah explains. “Those environments are actually where I perform best and enjoy the most.”
Today, Savannah brings those skills to her role at the Hundertwasser Art Centre. As a Visitor Host, she sells tickets, assists guests, answers enquiries, and helps visitors enjoy every aspect of the centre’s world-class exhibitions and rooftop spaces.
No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly what she loves about the role.
“I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and helping them make the most of their visit.”
One achievement that Savannah is particularly proud of is becoming the youngest person hired by the organisation.
“It was an incredible feeling,” she says. “Knowing that my studies with ITC and the positive reference from my tutor helped me secure the position reinforced the value of all the hard work I had put into my education.”
Looking back, Savannah’s journey is a powerful reminder that success often starts with saying yes to an opportunity.
For students considering a future in tourism, her message is simple:
“Take the opportunity. It may feel intimidating at times, and there will be moments when you feel challenged, but that’s all part of the journey. If you have a passion for the industry and are willing to put in the effort, amazing opportunities can follow.”
She also believes one of the greatest strengths of studying tourism is the support available along the way.
“You don’t have to do it alone. There is a supportive team ready to guide and encourage you. With the right support, dedication, and belief in yourself, you can achieve far more than you might think.”
From a school workshop to the Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy, from full-time tourism studies to becoming the youngest team member at one of Northland’s most celebrated attractions, Savannah’s story is one of ambition, resilience, and achievement.
Her journey is already inspiring others, and as she continues to grow her career in tourism, one thing is certain, this is only the beginning.
We are incredibly proud of Savannah and look forward to seeing where her tourism journey takes her next.
Savannah’s story is proof that with passion, determination, and the right support, incredible opportunities can become reality. If you’re ready to invest in your future, build your confidence, and create a career that inspires those around you, now is the perfect time to take the first step.
