2027 Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy Expressions of Interest Open Now!

Posted on 19/08/2026 by

Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy gives students hands-on learning from skilled tutors.

It’s that time!

Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2027 Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy, and schools are invited to help identify students who could thrive in this exciting opportunity.

This academy gives Year 12 and 13 students the chance to learn more about New Zealand’s exciting tourism industry while still in high school.

What do students learn?

Throughout the programme, students gain practical insight into the tourism industry through hands-on learning, industry site visits, guest speakers and valuable connections with tourism businesses and professionals.

It’s an opportunity to discover the wide range of career pathways available in tourism while giving them another great option to consider for their next steps after they finish high school.

Students will gain 30 credits for this course.

As an example of an amazing success story, here’s a recent blog about ITC graduate Meleena, who began her journey at the Business of Tourism Academy, before enrolling with us full time, before making her way overseas to Disney on an international working holiday!

2027 Academy Details

The 2027 Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy begins on Friday 12 February 2027 and runs throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3.

  • Start date: Friday 12 February 2027
  • When: Fridays during Terms 1, 2 and 3
  • Time: 9.30am to 2.30pm
  • Location: ITC Whangārei Campus, NorthTec, 51 Raumanga Valley Road, Whangārei

The academy is delivered across 30 Fridays over three terms during the usual high school year.

You can view the full 2027 Academy Overview to see exactly what students will learn each Friday, and how the terms are divided for a natural progression through the tourism industry.

Educators can also use 2027 Student Flyer to post in school areas and share with students.

Who Can Apply?

The academy is designed for students who are interested in exploring a future in tourism and want to gain practical experience alongside their school studies.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be in Year 12 or Year 13 during 2027
  • Have a genuine interest in pursuing a pathway in tourism
  • Have their school’s support to attend the academy across all 30 scheduled Fridays
  • Be able to arrange their own transport to and from the Whangarei Campus

Transport to and from industry site visits during the academy day will be provided by ITC.

How Students Can Apply

Students should first discuss the opportunity with their school before submitting an Expression of Interest.

Eligible students can then complete the online Expression of Interest form. Our Schools Team will review applications before inviting shortlisted students to meet with the team to discuss their interest in the programme and the opportunities available.

These meetings are expected to take place in early Term 4 this year. We hope to fill all spaces in the academy before students go on study leave, so they know their plans for next year as soon as possible.

Help us Find the Next Generation of Tourism Pros!

Places in the 2027 Te Tai Tokerau Business of Tourism Academy are limited, so schools are encouraged to start identifying suitable students and submitting Expressions of Interest as early as possible.

If you know a student who is curious about tourism, enjoys learning through practical experiences and is interested in exploring the industry’s many career opportunities, the academy could be a great fit.

If you’d like to discuss whether the academy is right for one of your students, please don’t hesitate to contact us here.
