The 2022 ITC famil another great success
One of the highlights of the college year at ITC is the annual famil (familiarisation) trip. This is where students head off on adventures around New Zealand to get ‘familiar’ with some of the incredible tourism experiences on offer.
This gives them an insight into how it all works, and inspires them with areas they could work in once they graduate from ITC. And of course, it’s great fun!
Despite the challenges of 2022, the ITC famil still went ahead. This meant this year’s students get the most out of their education journey, going on an epic three-day adventure around Northland. ITC is one of few providers still offering such an amazing experience.
Here’s a quick summary of their experience!
Day one
Students stopped en route at Whangarei Falls where they had time to stretch their legs and take in the stunning scenery. Next stop, Paihia, to check into their accommodation at the famous Haka Lodge. The rest of the afternoon and evening was free time for them to explore the area.
Day two
On day two, they departed Paihia early to make the most of their full day trip to the Far North. First stop is Te Rerenga Wairua, the northmost tip of Aotearoa, then off to the epic Te Paki sand dunes. After working up a sweat on the dunes they headed to a stunning local beach where they had time to stroll or just relax and of course take a few selfies.
Day three
On their final day they set off on a half-day Bay of Islands Cruise to the famous Hole in the Rock on Motukōkako Island. Afterwards, they journeyed to the end of the Cape Brett Peninsula looking out for dolphins, whales and other marine life.
Feedback from the students
No education in travel and tourism is complete without a chance to actually explore New Zealand’s tourism industry. But that’s just part of what makes this three-day famil so popular for students.
Here are a few examples of their feedback:
- “That was a trip to remember. It made me want to work for such a company to give customers a trip to remember.”
- “It was so cool going back to places I had not been too in so long but learning so much about them. It was awesome to network with industry.”
- “There was so much to learn but it was made enjoyable too.”
- “Every activity and adventure was amazing! It was such an incredible opportunity. The amount of knowledge and experience the tour guide had was amazing.”
