It’s a strange time for anyone starting their careers right now. The rise of AI has started to change the jobs landscape, which might be making it scary for people making career decisions.
And then there’s tourism and travel.
The world’s fastest growing sector
A new report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has highlighted just how strong the travel and tourism sector really is.
In 2025, it generated a massive US$11.6 trillion globally, which accounts for almost 10% of the entire planet’s GDP.
Importantly, it also generated one in three new jobs. And that’s on top of travel and tourism already being one of the biggest employers on the planet!
In fact, “the sector’s growth (4.1%) exceeded overall global economic growth (2.8%) by almost 50%, underscoring its role as a primary engine of global expansion.”
And in real numbers, this industry is now supporting 366 million jobs worldwide. That’s more than the entire population of the United States all working in travel and tourism. Plus, a lot of that growth is in the Asia-Pacific region, meaning that a lot of these jobs are closer to home here in Aotearoa than you might think.
Best year ever for travel and tourism
Perhaps unsurprisingly, all that growth has meant that the world has now recorded its best year ever for travel and tourism – all just five years after the entire industry shut down during the pandemic.
For those of us working in travel and tourism now, it’s an incredibly exciting time where no two days are the same and every opportunity is a great one.
For those considering what to do next, whether that’s graduating high school and entering the workforce, or potentially retraining for a new career, it means that travel and tourism might be an extremely attractive industry.
