New opportunities arise for graduates as tourism industry evolves

Posted on 25/09/2024 by

New technology is creating new pathways and career opportunities for those in the travel and tourism industry.

Like any industry, tourism and travel will evolve with the times. Even Instagram, a simple photo sharing platform, has already had a huge impact on the way people travel by creating Insta-famous locations, and by making lesser-known destinations more well known.

Now that technology continues to evolve, it is having even more of an effect on not just how we travel – but how we can work in the travel and tourism industry.

Tourism industry opportunities

A recent article on TTG (Travel Trade Gazette Asia) covered the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Youth Symposium. During the symposium, a number of experts spoke about how youths can find their way in the industry.

One of those experts was Nerea Caldes, a senior software developer at Travel Compositor. She talked about how the industry is in need of people who are tech savvy enough to enter the workplace and find a way to bridge the gap between traditional tourism practices, and new innovative digital solutions.

“We have developed a new search box powered by AI (artificial intelligence), where you can type in your holiday preferences in natural language, and it will filter the best options for you. This machine learning-driven approach is something that will become increasingly powerful in the coming years,” she said.

Of course, AI is already in use in the tourism industry. The World Economic Forum discussed how facial recognition is already used for checking in at hotels and in airports, and AI-driven robots are already cleaning, serving, and carrying out other tasks.

Another newer trend is that of sustainability. While it has been something on traveller’s minds for some time, it is now becoming a necessity.

“True sustainability is being demanded and recognised, and it’s only going to grow,” explained Mike Stewart, general manager for Thailand and Laos at Intrepid Travel, at the PATA Symposium.
