Do you dream of working in the cruise ship industry? Read on to find out what it’s like to have a cruise career.

Welcome to a new feature on the ITC Blog called ‘My Dream Job’, where we share stories from graduates who are working in their dream careers.

First up, meet Linda Divitt, a Reservations Consultant for Princess Cruises. Below, she gives us a glimpse into what it’s like to work in the cruise ship industry and shares some of her favourite memories from her career so far.

Where it all began

Linda graduated from ITC in 2003 with an Advanced Diploma in Travel, Tourism, and Information Technology. Soon after, she followed her cruise dream across the Tasman Sea.

“I moved to Sydney in July 2005 and it’s now coming up to my 10th anniversary of working for Carnival Australia. My passion is cruise ships – my role has changed over 10 years, however I still love what I do.”

Every day is different

As Reservations Consultant, her job is to respond to customer enquiries and help people make a booking.

“I love meeting and talking to guests about their experiences. Every day is different, and I still learn information even after 10 years – the industry is always changing,” says Linda.

Travel perks

Linda also gets to experience some cruise holidays firsthand.

“One of my favourite memories was when I travelled on my very first cruise. We got an email in 2008 asking if anyone wanted to go on the Sapphire Princess from Auckland back to Sydney the very next day. I was like yes, me! I want to do it. I somehow managed to find the money and get the leave approved, and find someone to come with me (my dad).”

Linda has now enjoyed eight cruises, but the first one is still her favourite.

“I have done cruises in NZ, Australia, and the Islands. I have also travelled through Europe and have been to New York and the UK a few times.”

Tips for ITC students

“Do what you love – travel, travel, travel. Experience is key to providing service to guests – they want to hear about your personal experiences and you can help them decide if a destination is right for them,” says Linda.
