Meet the graduate who is working the job of his dreams at AJ Hackett!

Posted on 09/05/2024 by

Cyrus Morris-Webb went from struggling high school student to AJ Hackett star! Find out how in our latest graduate interview.

There’s nothing that makes the team at ITC happier than seeing a student graduate and land the job of their dreams. That’s why we’re so excited for Cyrus Morris-Webb, an Auckland City Campus graduate who is now working an incredible job at AJ Hackett.

We asked Cyrus a few questions about how he came to join the ITC family, and how that decision lead him to his new career.

How did your adventure begin with us at ITC? How did you first hear or experience our college?

I attended two high schools, Kaipara College and Whangaparāoa College. I was failing year 13 so I got put in to this star course at my school and I had to go to ITC for the first week of the holidays to get 8 credits so I did. That small amount of time I was there I enjoyed it so I signed up to join it the next year.

What do you think ITC does different from other education providers?

Help you get the job of your dreams. Through the work experience I could get the opportunity to work for AJ Hackett

What is your fondest memory of ITC?

The famil trip. We go away for 3 days and experience tourism with our class.

What is your current adventure after ITC?

I work for AJ Hackett bungy and have recently become a guide

What will a typical day look like for you at AJ Hackett?

Checking people in to do the SkyJump of the Sky Tower and gearing them up and catching them at the bottom. I’ve recently become a guide too.

How did ITC prepare or support you for this?

ITC has helped me become the person I am today.

What are you excited most about your journey from here?

Learning all these new roles that we can do at AJ Hackett.

Cyrus at work.

What advice do you have for others wanting to study tourism?

Always try your best, even if you think you can’t do it. Ask for help if you need it and don’t be shy.

A word from AJ Hackett Auckland Sites Manager, Priel Paniora

Priel explained how Cyrus first got introduced to AJ Hackett bungy as part of the ITC work experience, and by volunteering to run a horizontal bungy as part of an expo during his studies.

“His positive attitude and ability to follow our safety guidelines meant he was a good fit for work experience. Since then, Cyrus has secured a full time contract and has been a valuable addition to the team. He is reliable, hardworking and enjoys every interaction with each of our visitors from all over the world. Cyrus is set to train as a Bridge Climb guide this month and is looking at a bright career ahead in tourism.”

ITC Employment Consultant Sarndra adds her comments

Another of ITC’s commitment to our students is our Employment Consultant Sarndra Stephens, who works hard to help students and graduates find work opportunities, prepare them for interviews, and support them through the application process – then cheer the loudest when they get hired!

Sarndra only had glowing things to say about Cyrus.

“From the get-go Cyrus was an amazing student. He struggled with much of the written work but he had goals and incredible determination. He lived the furthest away of most of our students and yet he had the best attendance and punctuality and he got involved with everything and volunteered for everything. Volunteering early in his course at the Go With Tourism Expo was a turning point. He volunteered to help Leo, the Auckland Sales Manager from AJ Hackett run the horizontal bungy and impressed Leo with his energy, his initiative and the input he had on giving the customers such a fun and positive experience. Cyrus loved it so much he volunteered extra days to help Leo out and he decided then and there he wanted to work for AJ Hackett.”

“Cyrus overcame all sorts of obstacles, got on with everyone at college and everyone here at ITC is so incredibly happy and proud of what he has achieved and will continue to achieve.”

Want to follow in Cyrus’ footsteps? (whether or not that includes jumping off things!)

Cyrus is a great inspiration for any students considering ITC. From struggling in high school to giving tourism and travel a chance, to working in his dream job and getting great praise from his new bosses – it’s an amazing journey, and one we can’t wait to follow.
