Meet John Armstrong, our Tutor who brings inspiration and sunshine to the classroom

Posted on 11/08/2025 by

ITC Tutor John Armstrong has been an important part of the ITC whanau, since 2005!

Known for his friendly nature and great sense of humour, John has been a tutor at ITC since 2005. He loves helping students discover the magic of a career in travel and tourism. John shares his journey and passion for the industry.

How did you develop your passion for the tourism industry?

Back in the 1980s, many of my friends worked for airlines such as Air New Zealand, Continental Airlines, Pan Am, United Airlines, and Singapore Airlines.

I was inspired by their love for travel, especially in an era when travelling was seen as glamorous and exciting.
I wanted to be part of that world — helping people have the best trips possible and creating memorable experiences for them.

What is your background in the travel industry?

I began my career in the finance department at Air New Zealand, but within just a few months I moved into reservations.  From there, I quickly advanced to supervisor, and eventually became the Travelcentre Manager in Newmarket.

How will your experience help support students?

I want to inspire my students to feel the same excitement and passion for travel that I’ve carried throughout my career.  Travel is about creating joy and unforgettable moments, and I hope to pass that feeling on to the next generation.

What do you love about your role at ITC?

My passion is travel. I live and breathe it – and I’m lucky enough to continue my passion with ITC. I have taught here since 2005, and it’s been wonderful. I work for a good company with great values and that’s important. I also love working with young people – something I appreciate more and more as the years go by and I gain experience. It’s magic when I hear a past student of mine is managing an operation in Narita airport or is a tour guide in Greece. It’s magic when I meet them at the check-in counter, or as a flight attendant.

ITC students are everywhere now and that provides so much satisfaction.  I love showing today’s students that working in travel isn’t just about doing a job — it’s about caring for each traveller.  Your role is a link in their journey, and you have the power to make their holiday special.

What are the most important skills in the tourism industry?

  • Caring about each customer’s unique needs and situation
  • Being a great listener and remembering key details
  • Putting yourself in the customer’s shoes — whether they’re a nervous first-time traveller or a frequent flyer used to premium service.
  • Remaining professional and adaptable in all situations
What is your best advice for those joining the industry now?

Make a real difference to your customers’ holidays!  Be your best for them. Don’t just act like a computer — be there for people when they truly need you.

Study at ITC, where the tutors and team really know their stuff!

Did you know that the ITC team has more than 250 years of experience between them? Everyone here is a bit travel mad, which means we have lifetimes of experience, knowledge, and skills to share with students – not to mention passion for the industry.

We’d love to pass on that knowledge. Get in touch with our friendly team to find out what qualifications you can earn with ITC, or ask us about how to enrol today.
