ITC classes off to an awesome start for 2019

Some of ITC’s newest students for 2019.
The start of the year means plenty of new faces around ITC.
In January, we welcomed several classrooms of eager new students to our Auckland campuses and our Study From Home distance learning courses.
So, what’s it like to be a new student at ITC? Here’s a glimpse into what happens during the first few weeks…
Team building (on-campus) or Orientation Day (Study From Home)
All of our on-campus classes participate in team building activities to ‘break the ice’ and get to know each other.
The team building activity is also a student’s first academic challenge – it’s assessed to get students learning straightaway.
“The students learn about team roles, how teams work together, and also plan and carry out an activity that requires a team solution,” says ITC Head of Academic Services Carla Sutton.
“This all happens within the first week of starting so it helps students form good study and work habits from the beginning. The activities are fun, and also have a challenging factor. Teams solve the challenges together, which helps to cement their bond.”
Our Study From Home students attend an Orientation Day at the beginning of their qualification. This is an opportunity for them to meet their tutors and their classmates and to get some of their practical assessments underway. It’s great to meet everyone in person on this day.
Dress code
The first few weeks are also a chance for students to get used to the dress code. At ITC, we enforce a black & white dress code to encourage students to dress professionally (and help them practice for when they get a ‘real job’ in the not-too-distant-future).
For many students, this is the first time they have had to dress corporate so it’s a big deal. But after a few weeks, most students have settled into the habit and appreciate the ease of wearing a ‘uniform’ to College every day.
They quickly realise how good it feels to present themselves professionally when industry guest speakers come in to ITC, or when the classes go out to conduct industry site visits or enjoy activities such as the Sky Tower and Auckland Bridge Climb & Bungy.
