From “no interest in tourism” to “loving the industry”: Graduate Mele’s incredible story!

Posted on 29/10/2025 by

Mele on her first day at work, representing “how every bit of effort, sweat, and even tears put into my ITC assessments has helped me grow so much.”

Mele Aitu is the perfect example of an ITC student who made the most of our qualifications, dedicated team, and endless travel and tourism opportunities.

She recently reached out to the team at ITC to give us an update about her career.

“Honestly, ITC has shaped me into the person I am today. I came into ITC completely clueless and had no interest in tourism at all. But look at me now, absolutely loving the industry! I truly thank the ITC community for their empathy, support, and for always pushing me to reach my full potential.”

Of course, we had to learn more, so we set up a quick interview!

Can you tell us about your role with Helloworld?

“Helloworld is all about making travel exciting and effortless! From relaxing getaways to city adventures, we turn dream trips into reality with amazing deals, trusted partners, and expert guidance every step of the way.”

What did you learn at ITC that has been most useful for getting the job?

“I’ve learned so much at ITC. The tutors, especially Take, have helped me understand the realities of life. I came in with low confidence, but now I’m filled with self-belief and determination to be my best. After losing both my parents, ITC showed me incredible compassion and helped me build resilience, something I’ll always be grateful for.”

What was your favourite highlight from your time at ITC?

“My favourite highlight of ITC is how connected we all are. Everyone respects and embraces each other’s cultures and backgrounds, creating a space filled with empathy and understanding.”

How did ITC help you with the job application process?

“A huge shoutout to the magnificent Sarndra, she helped me get this job! She’s such a strong, kind woman who continuously encourages us, especially within our ITC community, to aim for the stars.”

Sarndra had this to say about Mele:

“I dealt with Mele in her level 4 studies and loved her positive energy, enthusiasm and her can-do attitude. She was always warm and bubbly, keen  and prepared to work hard.

She did her work experience at the Ibis Auckland Airport Hotel and her grandmother died on the third day. Her communication with both the hotel and myself was A1 and she was keen to return to the Ibis to complete her work experience in her own time when she graduated from her level 4 course. Ibis was impressed with her initiative and work ethic and would have offered her a front Office role if they had had an opening.”

“When Helloworld sent the job description for the role at ATS Pacific as an Inbound NZ Tour Consultant I instantly thought of Mele as she had proven she was genuinely keen to give customers positive experiences and keen to learn and do well. We all love that she is enjoying her role and workplace so much and wish her well for what we believe will be a bright future.”

What is your advice for anyone thinking of working in travel and tourism?

“My advice to anyone thinking about joining the travel and tourism industry is to just go for it! The industry is full of growth, connection, and amazing opportunities. Stay passionate, step out of your comfort zone, and let your curiosity guide you.”

“And to future ITC students, no matter how hard things seem at the beginning, remember this is just your “now.” Your future will shine as bright as you make it. Keep pushing, stay focused, and never forget that you’ve got to start from the bottom to reach the top.”

What are your ultimate career goals?

“My ultimate career goal is to explore different areas within travel and tourism, and eventually work behind the scenes in aviation.”

Study with ITC for more than just a qualification

While Mele earned a valuable qualification with ITC, she was also wise enough to make the most of the fantastic tutors and dedicated employment consultants on the team. As a result, she is now working in a fantastic job, and has taken the first step in an exciting career!

Congratulations Mele – we can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
