Five ways to be a tourist in your hometown this summer

Posted on 09/01/2018 by

Stuck at home this summer? Make the most of the warm weather with these five tips for being a tourist in your hometown.

As a travel-lover, you probably wish you were on a plane to somewhere exotic this summer.

But you don’t have to travel internationally to live the life of a traveller. Here are five ways to be a tourist in your own hometown this summer.

1. Get ideas from your local i-Site

Visit your closest i-Site to stock up on tourism brochures. This is the best way to put yourself into a tourist’s shoes. Consider all the tourism activities on offer and pick a few fun things to try over summer. This doesn’t have to expensive – NZ is famous for its free natural attractions, such as beaches, bush walks, and mountain ranges.

2. Join a tour group

Pretend to be a tourist (literally) by joining a tour group led by a professional guide. This is a great way to learn new things about your hometown, as well as observe first-hand what it’s like to work as a tour guide. It’s also a great opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world.

3. Do something adventurous

Get your adrenaline pumping with bungy jumping, canyoning, white water rafting, abseiling, or one of NZ’s many other adventure tourism activities. Get out of your comfort zone to make this summer one to remember!

4. Go on day trips

Fill up your car with petrol, snacks, and friends and hit the road. Explore off-the-track beaches and parks, and stop at NZ’s many quirky small towns for coffee and shopping. You’ll be amazed at how much there is to do and see within a few hours drive of your front door.

5. Eat in new places

Make an effort to try new cafes and restaurants whenever you meet friends for a meal. Don’t go to all of your old favourites – venture into places you’d never normally visit. Or walk down the street and randomly pick a spot. That’s what you’d do if you were a tourist, after all! Who knows, you might discover some amazing new eateries.

Pretending to be a tourist in your own backyard is a great way to have fun this summer and learn about the tourism industry at the same time. Make the most of your time off and enjoy everything our beautiful country has to offer. There’s a reason why people fly for hours to get here.
