Two-year tourism and travel diploma provides variety of transferable in-demand skills
The Diploma in International Tourism and Travel Management available at ITC is a level 5 course specifically designed for international students, and is one of the most valuable programmes available at ITC.
Not only do students walk away with a variety of immensely practical qualifications, they also learn a number of skills that can easily transfer from one role – and one career – to another.
The Diploma in International Tourism and Travel Management
The Diploma in International Tourism and Travel Management is an excellent choice for any student looking for a career anywhere in the tourism and travel industry, anywhere in the world.
During the first year, students learn an array of practical skills that apply to roles across the industry, including travel documentation, flight attending, ticketing and online fares, the Amadeus reservation system, the cruise ship industry, and destination geography.
The second year of the diploma is more theory based. It covers areas of management such as marketing, planning, human resources, finance, research, legislation, and communication.
Throughout the two years, students will also learn from hands-on experience through field visits, work opportunities, and guest speakers. This includes two 3-day familiarisation trips, and the opportunity to work part time (up to 20 hours outside of class) in the industry.
Students completing the diploma will graduate with:
- ITC Diploma in International Tourism & Travel Management
- ITC Cabin Crew Online Certificate
- New Zealand Certificate in Tourism Level 3 – with a strand in Tourism and Travel
- New Zealand Certificate in Travel Level 4
- New Zealand Diploma in Tourism Level 5
- ITC Amadeus Reservations Certificate
The skills in demand right now
Once the course is complete, students are prepared to enter the travel and tourism industry with an extensive understanding of the key aspects of the field. Yet that does not mean they are limited to a career in travel in tourism, as many of their learned skills and knowledge apply elsewhere.
For example, the World Economic Forum recently published an article outlining the five skills that are most in demand right now, even as the job market struggles during the pandemic.
These skills are:
- Communication
- Problem solving
- Analytical skills
- Customer service
- Leadership
These are all soft skills that countless careers around the world require, and they are all soft skills attained by students completing the two-year Diploma at ITC.
Of the seven transferable soft skills mentioned in New Zealand recruitment company Hudson’s recent article on the subject, ITC specifically teaches five of these throughout the diploma, including collaboration, communication, leadership skills, problem solving, and strategic thinking. The final two, forward thinking and managing change and uncertainty, are gained throughout the learning process.
While this Diploma is certainly most applicable to the travel and tourism industry with its specific hard skills training and overall focus, that’s not to say students couldn’t take a side step after graduating if need be.
