Tourism businesses inspire next generation of tourism workers at ITC Industry Expo
Students on the cusp of entering the tourism workforce got a ‘taste of tourism’ at the ITC Industry Expo in August.
Several leading tourism businesses presented to ITC students, including Jucy, Fullers, AJ Hackett, Explore, Avsec, Customs, Sudima Hotel, and Fat Camel Backpackers.
The purpose of the Industry Expo is to educate students about what it’s like to work in the industry. It also gives tourism businesses the chance to impress the next generation of tourism workers, in the hope of attracting high-calibre staff.
It’s no secret that skilled tourism workers are in high demand, so tourism businesses jumped at the chance to get in front of a group of engaged, motivated tourism students.
One business, Avsec (aviation security), even ran an article about the Industry Expo in Airside magazine, saying that the expo “gave Avsec an ideal environment to promote what we do, helping with our future recruitment and building the profile of the Aviation Security Service brand”.
Avsec Operations Manager Rik Martin said the Industry Expo was also an opportunity to showcase the importance of aviation security.
“Our message conveyed the importance of our work. While some of what we do can be repetitive, our mission is to ‘protect aviation’, so at any time we can be called upon to act or react to a security incident,” Rik explained.
ITC students loved the Expo, as it was a chance to meet potential employers and ‘shop around’ for possible career paths.
Here is some of the feedback from students.
“It was fun and informative.”
“They made me want to work there.”
“I have a better idea of what’s available now.”
“The presentations and talks helped me understand and know a little better about what the different jobs are.”
“They were engaging and had passion for why they joined the industry, it made me realise there are more jobs than just cabin crew jobs out there.”
“I learned a lot about different jobs in the industry.”
The ITC Industry Expo is held every year and is a fantastic networking opportunity for both tourism students and tourism businesses.
