Tips for making a career change

Posted on 12/06/2018 by

Are you thinking about changing careers so you can join the tourism industry? Read on for some great tips on managing the transition.

Are you thinking about making a career change and joining the tourism industry?

Firstly, great choice! New Zealand tourism is thriving and you’ll be stepping into an industry with so much potential for growth.

Secondly, we know changing careers is hard. So here are some tips for making the transition as smooth as possible.

1. Take your time

We know it can be tempting to hand in your resignation as soon as inspiration strikes, but it’s a good idea to get your ducks in a row before you switch jobs.

Take your time, do plenty of research, visit possible training providers (like ITC), and talk to people who are currently working in the industry you’re keen to join. This blog post — Five great things about working in tourism (according to ITC graduates) — is a great place to start your research.

You’ll feel so much better about making the change once you’ve done some research to support your decision.

2. Consider upskilling

To get a great tourism job, you’ll need a great tourism qualification. The good news is, you can gain a qualification in as little as six months of full-time study.

Depending on your level of work and life experience, you may be able to fast-track your studies and go straight into a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification. Our course advisers can assess your unique situation and guide you on the best qualification to suit your skills and knowledge.

3. Practice mindfulness

As with all change, a career change might bring up feelings of fear and uncertainty. You might be experiencing thoughts along the lines of: What if I make the wrong choice? What if it doesn’t work out?

That’s why it’s important to get in a positive frame of mind. Consider introducing a mindfulness practice, such as meditation or gratitude journaling, to help quell feelings of anxiety. Be gentle on yourself and make self-care a priority if possible. Little things like ensuring you get enough rest and spending quality time with friends and family will help you feel confident about making a change.
