Auckland Airport boss confident NZ can sustain tourism growth
The chief executive of Auckland Airport, Andrew Littlewood, is full of optimism about the future of New Zealand tourism. He believes with the right approach, the country can achieve further growth – providing the country finds a way to adapt to the increasing number of visitors.
“There are plenty of opportunities for this country but we will have to be receptive,” Mr Littlewood said.
He compared New Zealand’s tourism industry to that of Ireland, a country similar in size but which welcomes a lot more visitors each year.
“Ireland, which is also a small country with 4.5 million people, has 8.6 million visitors a year and I don’t think the people of Ireland think those visitors are taking over the country,” he said.

New American air service brings economic benefits
Qantas and American Airlines have announced a new daily route between Los Angeles and Auckland, with regional New Zealand connections via Jetstar. Chief executive of the Tourism Industry Association Chris Roberts says this new service is yet another step in the right direction towards NZ’s Tourism 2025 goals.
“The US is our third biggest visitor market and they enjoy what we have to offer. Tourism operators around the country will be keen to support this new service with activities and experiences that appeal to North American visitors,” says Mr Roberts.
“It’s fantastic to see airlines responding to the strong demand out of North America to visit New Zealand by increasing the supply.”
The new service is planned to commence in June 2016.

New Zealand’s Great Walks launch on Google Maps
360 degree views of New Zealand’s Great Walks are now available on Google Maps, including popular tracks such as the Abel Tasman and Routeburn.
The imagery was captured by the Google Street View Trekker, a backpack with more than 300 cameras which take photos every few seconds.
Ross Young, spokesman for Google New Zealand, said the addition of the Great Walks to Google Maps is likely to do wonders for tourism.
“Immersive technology experiences like these give international tourists the chance to see first-hand how stunning our country is before they travel,” says Ross.
“This is a great example of business and government working together to use technology and the internet to tell New Zealand’s story to the world.”

All Blacks to build ‘experience’ attraction on Auckland waterfront
New Zealand Rugby is building an interactive All Blacks attraction in Wynyard Quarter. Called ‘The All Blacks Experience’, this attraction will offer rugby-loving tourists the chance to learn more about how the sport is played in New Zealand, and is scheduled to open in 2017.
According to Steve Tew, New Zealand Rugby chief executive, this attraction fills a gap in the market and will draw substantial interest.
“Our research shows there is a real demand for an all-weather attraction like this on Auckland’s waterfront serving international and domestic visitors as well as Auckland locals,” Steve said.
“With tourism numbers growing rapidly, the business case stacks up strongly.”

Tourism and conservation to benefit from DOC/TIA partnership
The Tourism Industry Association (TIA) and Department of Conservation (DOC) have entered into a new partnership to protect New Zealand’s natural landscape. The partnership is centred around six key principles which are all designed to help the tourism industry and DOC work closely together to benefit the environment.
“People travel here from all over the world to enjoy our spectacular landscapes and natural scenery,” said TIA chief executive Chris Roberts. “As the tourism industry pursues its Tourism 2025 goal of almost doubling total tourism revenue to $41 billion, we want to work closely with DOC to manage that growth to ensure our environment is protected and the visitor experience is enhanced.”
