Renaissance Tours employs 50 ITC students

Posted on 25/11/2014 by

Auckland’s cruise season has started! Several cruise ships are scheduled to dock in the harbour over the busy summer period, bringing many overseas visitors to Auckland’s doorstep.

Students from the International Travel College (ITC) will be working on the frontline when ships arrive, welcoming visitors into Auckland and processing tickets and related paperwork. Renaissance Tours has hired 50 ITC students to work as check-in agents at The Hilton throughout the summer.

One of the successful job applicants, Diploma student Courtney Robinson, has nothing but good things to say about the role so far.

“Working at a large cruise terminal like The Hilton is definitely an interesting experience. It’s really exciting being around such an eclectic group of people from all over the world. You get to be their first point of contact while they’re in New Zealand which gives you a very unique opportunity to show them how friendly and welcoming kiwis are, and how much we appreciate people making the huge trip to come to our country,” Courtney said.

Renaissance Tours recruited students directly from the College and provided successful applicants with full training and support. ITC Account Manager Ceri Jenkins is pleased to see so many students in employment.

“ITC has been working with Renaissance Tours for two to three years now, but we have never had so many students hired at the same time. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to gain some hands-on work experience before graduation,” Ceri said.

Courtney believes this experience will open up other job opportunities later down the track. In fact, he is even considering a career in the cruise industry.

“Interacting with the customers one-on-one and getting trained on the cruise check-in procedure provides invaluable experience to take forward into other career opportunities,” he said.

“Seeing how truly impressive the Celebrity Solstice Ship is, coupled with the excitement of the customers, makes the cruise industry very appealing as a future career for me personally… and I wouldn’t have had this opportunity if not for the work experience roles offered to the students at ITC.”

I myself am also a current ITC student and have worked all 3 of the turn around dates so far and can’t wait for the final one! Working as a check in agent and in a variety of other roles, I have gained much valuable experience as well as thoroughly enjoying myself at the same time while meeting fascinating travelers from across the globe. I recommend to anyone given the opportunity to work with Renaissance Tours in the future to snap up the chance and providing I am still in New Zealand by the turn around dates next season will definitely be doing it again if asked! :) Thank you Renaissance Tours you have a kickass team!
