It’s never too late for a career change! Just ask Carol Weaver.

Whether you’re fresh out of high school, have been out of the workforce for a while, or are looking to make a career change, it’s never a bad time to study at ITC or with Study From Home.

Just ask Carol Weaver, the 64-year-old who had thought about becoming a flight attendant often throughout her life. She has been working as a science teacher and career advisor for Orewa College, which is how she came into contact with ITC in the first place.

Here’s Carol’s incredible story in her own words.

From teacher to trainee flight attendant

“At the “young” age of 64 I decided to have a complete career change. I have at various stages of my life thought about being a flight attendant, but life and children always seemed to get in the way. I am currently a teacher.

I attended an ITC careers advisors’ update date where Qantas came in and did a presentation on becoming a flight attendant. I almost jokingly put my hand up and asked if there was a height or age limit. With no age barrier I started to think about the positives, something for myself to fulfil a long held dream, a fun lifestyle and complete fresh new career.

I talked to cabin crew that I knew through friends, looked at the websites for Qantas and Air New Zealand and asked a lot of questions. I then began the application process and each stage I got through made me more determined to do this. It was a little scary as I haven’t applied for a job in many years, even the CVs are so different to what I was used to but I just took it in small steps and learnt as I went along.

The end of the journey is near as I have just been taken on as a flight attendant trainee. I will have an intense training to work through but I have “googled” study tips and how to improve your memory so I feel ready to take this on.

You are never too old!”

What is Air New Zealand looking for in its flight attendants?

As the travel industry recovers from the pandemic, Air New Zealand and other airlines around the world have been working hard to employ new staff. We have loved seeing many of our graduates, such as Mar Chit, get jobs in in the aviation industry, and we know many of our current and future students dream of working for airlines as well.

So what are they looking for in their employees?

We know that Air New Zealand is looking for customer-focused representatives who can connect with others easily. They must also be resilient, reliable, passionate, unique, and fun!

The airline is always looking for people who will help them share Aotearoa with the world, who have a can-do attitude, and who will be themselves while upholding Air NZ’s values.

If you’re looking for a career change, ITC and Study From Home can help make it happen. Our qualifications and dedicated Employment Consultant could be just what you need to make a move into your dream career.
