ITC students discover the best of New Zealand
“Don’t neglect the gold in your own backyard.” – Ben Okri
What does the word travel mean to you? For most people, it signifies flying far away from home and exploring distant and exotic places. Perhaps you dream of seeing the Eiffel Tower and eating croissants in Paris, or hiking the Inca Trail in South America? Or maybe a Safari in Africa is more your thing, or a sailing tour in Croatia?
Creating a travel wishlist can feel exciting but also daunting. You may wonder: will I ever truly make it to all of these beautiful destinations? How can I afford to travel the world while I study and gain work experience?
If international travel seems a distant dream at this point, then we have an interim solution: why not explore your own backyard?
New Zealand is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. While you sit in class in Auckland and dream about flying far away, people from other countries are probably dreaming about New Zealand!
We are incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful place. At ITC, we try to teach our students not only about the world, but also about the treasures to be found at home.
Recently our students hosted Destination New Zealand Expositions as part of an assessment. They were split into teams of two and tasked with researching about a specific New Zealand region.
Once they had completed their research, they were required to create marketing material such as brochures and posters and then ‘sell’ their destination at an Exposition, open to staff and students.
This exercise taught the participants important researching, selling & marketing skills, but perhaps more importantly, it opened their eyes to New Zealand’s diversity and beauty.
Many students discovered places they didn’t know existed and were in awe of the tourism opportunities around the country. From the tip of the North Island to the bottom of the South, every New Zealand town – big or small – has something unique to offer.
ITC City Campus Manager Michelle Chatfield was impressed by the student’s enthusiasm for the project and knows they will be able to use this knowledge in their future careers.
“The Destination NZ Expo is a great way to consilidate the student’s learning of the subject. It allows them to learn, research, create and present on what NZ has to offer in different regions,” Michelle said.
“Seeing students discover so much about areas that they knew nothing about, and be able to really promote it in an ‘industry expo’ style was fantastic! I was so impressed to see their level of knowledge and to see their geniune desire to go and explore some of these places one day themselves.”
