What do you get when you combine delicious food + colourful costumes + fun skits? Global Wednesday, of course!

Every year ITC hosts Global Wednesday, a student event dedicated to celebrating different countries and cultures.

Each class is required to prepare a presentation about their chosen country, and this often turns into one big celebratory feast, complete with plenty of music, fun and laughter.

We asked our student bloggers to report back with the inside word about this year’s event. Here’s what they thought.

Kelsi (Team Mexico)

There was a Jamaican chocolate fountain, a Brazilian football cake and a Japanese tea ceremony. There were tacos, curries, grapes and scones. I saw togas, kimonos, saris and baseball shirts. It was a multi-cultural celebration; a fantastic day, by far. ITC’s Global Wednesday was a stunner!

My class had Mexico. (Who doesn’t love a little fiesta)? Estados Unidos Mexicanos was colonized by the Spanish and is made up of 31 states and one Federal Disctrict, the capital, Mexico D.F. It has an estimated population of 13 million people and is the most populous Spanish speaking country in the world. There is a mix of Indigenous and European heritage and culture, making this country a fascinating place to visit. Once you’ve been, it’s hard to stay away!

Mexico Global Wednesday

Team Mexico made a great effort with their costumes and delicious food. One chica even grew homemade chillies!

We decided to showcase some of Mexico’s well known foods, including tacos, nachoes, beans and – of course – churros. One chica grew her own chillies and we used this to our full advantage. Muy picante! Everybody knows that ponchos and sombreros are very Mexican and we all dressed up to show off these classic clothes.

All of the classes used clothes to the upmost advantage and some of them just looked stunning. I thought everbody put in a lot of effort and it was great fun to look around and see what they had thought up. India had a great greeting (Namaste!), Greece had some neat decorations (balloons, anyone?) and England had hair rollers (looking good, Tessa!)

I can’t wait for next year :)

Wes (Team United Kingdom)

The United Kingdom was my class’s presentation, and boy was it a good one. I learnt many things such as the countries that make up the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), as well as about traditional English foods, music, sports, historic icons and more.

For our preparation we organised ourselves into groups, each comprising of a number of members in charge of a topic, such as food, presentation or skit.

For our food we had traditional sandwiches, digestive biscuits, scones and tea. Our skit was our very own touch of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, which was interesting to say the least! In the end, we all came together as a class and pulled it off.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • England is the birthplace of William Shakespeare
  • It is against the law to get drunk in a pub in England
  • In Scotland it is against the law to get drunk and possess a cow

WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT THE WORLD

Global Wednesday was such a memorable day and a unique chance to learn about some of the countries that make up this wonderful world, from China to Brazil and even Italy.

I learnt so much about delicious foods, local music and other lifestyles and ways of life. It was truly a fun filled and amazing day with nothing but smiles and laughter. The skits of the different countries was probably the highlight of may day and Brazil’s skit was a really good one that got everyone jumping. I would have to say out of all the different foods, Indian was my favourite.

Viena (Team France)

Celebrating the annual Global Wednesday Festival at the International Travel College was the most amazing event I’ve ever experienced. There were a lot of varieties of food, costumes and entertainment from each ITC class.

I had such a great day, and what made it so special was all the hard work that we put together for our country, France. Other countries on the day included Japan, USA, Jamaica, Brazil, Mexico, United Kingdom, Pacific Islands and India. I do believe that everyone had such a great day and a huge amount of fun like I did. It was the BEST EVENT EVER!
