Introducing Rachel Mackwood: Botany’s newest Course Advisor!

Rachel Mackwood is Botany’s newest Course Advisor!
Our Botany Campus students can consider themselves lucky, because we’ve just had a fantastic new Course Advisor join the team!
Her name is Rachel Mackwood, and her experience in the tourism industry and love for all things travel will be a huge help for students looking to get into this industry.
We asked Rachel to share her background and what she’s looking forward to most about this new role with ITC:
How did you begin your passion for the tourism industry?
When I was 20 I joined my first airline and from then on I was hooked on travel. I worked for two different airlines before I settled with British Airways. I flew as cabin crew for nine years and loved every second of it.
What does your travel industry history look like?
I worked for two different airlines in the UK (Caledonian Airways and Thomas Cook Airlines) before I settled with British Airways. I flew as cabin crew for 9 years and loved every second of it. I worked my up to Purser (cabin manager) and worked on the world wide fleet for four years. I also worked in the British Airways recruitment sector and first class cabin training whilst I was pregnant and not flying.
What was your favourite job you’ve done?
After my flying career I went on to become a professional makeup artist. This has been my most rewarding job to date as I get to make my clients feel amazing. I trained whilst I was flying and did every course I could in London to study hair and makeup.
I knew one day this would be my career after flying as it had always been a passion of mine. I have done films, worked in television in the UK and NZ and have run a wedding team of artists for over 10 years in NZ.
How will your experience help support students?
Sometimes we all need a little push you get the best out of ourselves. I’ve always believed you should feel the fear and do it anyway. I’m a very driven person and can’t wait to help others get into the amazing travel and tourism industry that awaits them. From previously being a tutor also at the college for a short time when I first moved to NZ, I know it is an amazing place that will support your journey.
What are you looking forward to the most in your new role?
Meeting new people that want to achieve great things in life. Obviously looking forward to all the shared lunches at the college but also getting to know some new faces.
What do you think are the most important skills to have in the tourism industry?
- Top notch customer service skills
- Adaptable mindset
- Problem solver
- Proud appearance
- Fun but professional
- And biggest one for me …positive attitude.
What is your best advice for those getting into the industry now?
Give it a go! We are here to help you at every step of the way to achieving great things but that very first step has to come from you.
