Did you know you can study at ITC for FREE?Posted on 04/11/2020 by Hayley Clark
At the start of 2018, New Zealand began an initiative that allows citizens and residents to study for one year for FREE. Yet there are still plenty of students who don’t know that their first year of study can be covered by the government!
Here’s a little more about the Fees Free initiative, who’s eligible, what you can study at ITC without paying a cent, and how to apply.
What is the Fees Free initiative?
The Fees Free initiative was designed to encourage more people into taking up tertiary study or training, and it does this by offering one year of free study, or two years of free training for New Zealand citizens and some residents.
This can greatly reduce costs for some students, and completely eliminate them for others.
Who is eligible for the New Zealand Fees Free initiative?
Many people are eligible for this initiative. There are even many students who have applied successfully despite thinking that they were not eligible because they left school some time ago!
The initiative is designed for those who are undertaking their first year of tertiary study, which means that if you are coming out of high school, you should be eligible. It also means that if you finished high school several years ago but never entered into further study or training, you may also be eligible to apply. There are no age limits to the initiative.
There are also certain restrictions around where and what you can study. The Fees Free initiative is only applicable to New Zealand universities and other approved establishments, such as ITC. And finally, Fees Free will only cover studies at level 3 and above, which means that it won’t cover secondary school programmes.
You can read more about the eligibility criteria on the Fees Free website here.
Study at ITC with Fees Free
ITC is a Fees Free affiliated provider, which means that eligible students can enjoy a year of free study with us.
This means students could opt for any of these courses, and have the costs covered by the government:
- New Zealand Certificate in Tourism with a strand in Tourism and Travel Level 3
- New Zealand Certificate in Travel Level 4
- New Zealand Certificate in Tourism with a strand in Aviation Level 3
- New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel Level 5
These courses are all covered by the Fees Free initiative, and each offer students a wonderful opportunity to learn about tourism, travel, and aviation in New Zealand, with qualifications and highly transferrable skills that can help to set them up for rewarding careers in the industry.
Additionally, the team at ITC is experienced at dealing with the Fees Free initiative, and can help you to figure out the process, and even to apply for a StudyLink loan if you are not eligible for Fees Free.
How to apply for the Fees Free initiative
The first step is to determine if you are eligible, which you can do quickly by entering your National Student Number (NSN) to the checker tool here. If you are eligible, that’s all you have to do!
Once you know you are eligible, you can apply to the eligible ITC course of your choosing as per normal. The Tertiary Education Commission will let us know you are eligible, then pay us directly for your course, keeping the paperwork to an absolute minimum on your end.
Keep in mind that if you are not eligible, you may still be able to apply for a StudyLink loan, so you will still be able to sign up and get started on an exciting career in travel, tourism, or aviation.
For more information about the initiative, you can read the FAQs and details on the Fees Free website, or feel free to get in touch with us at ITC to talk about your course options.
