Be Inspired: Sam’s journey from shyness to confidence

Posted on 05/02/2019 by

Meet Samuel Pascoe, an ITC graduate with an inspiring story to share.

Welcome to a new feature on the ITC Blog called ‘Be Inspired’. Every few weeks, we will give you a ‘behind-the-scenes’ glimpse into the journey of an inspirational ITC student and share what it took for them to achieve their goals. Everyone climbs their own Everest, and these students hope to inspire others by sharing the truth of their journey to the summit.

Before Samuel Pascoe started studying at ITC, he was self-described as shy, quiet, and a little bit lost.

“I didn’t know where I was going career-wise or what I wanted to achieve,” says Sam.

He’d completed a Diploma in IT but felt he unfulfilled by that career path. He knew he wanted to learn more about the world, but he didn’t know the next best step.

Then the opportunity to study at ITC came up, and things started to fall into place.

“Thanks to studying at ITC, I now know where I want to go in the tourism industry and how I need to achieve these goals,” Sam explained.

Sam also found that studying at ITC helped him to overcome his shyness and feel more confident.

“I was shy about presentations and public speaking, but at ITC I learned the importance of doing research and knowing what I needed to talk about. That helped me gain confidence whether I was talking in front of a group or just to one customer,” says Sam.

He went on to have jobs where public speaking was a major part of the role, like working for Fullers as a guide on double-decker busses on Waiheke Island, and also in Milford Sound as a guide on some of the boats.

Sam’s tourism qualification then led to him getting a job with AAT in Ayers Rock Australia (part of the Travel Corporation).

One of the things Sam loves most about the industry is the huge variety of opportunities.

“The tourism industry is huge and has a great variety of jobs,” he says.

Sam has a few tips for people who would love to study at ITC and work in the tourism industry.

“Don’t be afraid to give 100% in whatever you do because how you do in every job will reflect on your reputation in the industry,” he advises.

“Also, be sure to work hard and learn from the experience of the tutors. They have been through it all in the industry and they know what you’re going through.”

Are you inspired by Sam’s journey? You too can climb your own Everest and create career opportunities you never thought were possible. Get in touch today to learn more about how ITC can support your airline, travel and tourism dreams.
