5 reasons why you should choose a career in tourism and travel

Posted on 06/03/2024 by

These students are already investing in their future travel and tourism careers on our Academy.

Amongst the team at ITC, we have more than 250 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry. And all we can say is: we love it, and we think you will too!

There are many, many reasons why we think you should choose a career in travel and tourism, but here are just five of the best.

  1. Tourism is one of New Zealand’s biggest employers

If you’re ever unsure about your job security, keep in mind that tourism is one of the biggest employers in the country.

Recent figures show that tourism either directly or indirectly supported 317,514 jobs in early 2023. That’s a little over 11% of the entire job market in Aotearoa!

Having an industry-recognised qualification such as those offered by ITC and Study From Home is a huge selling point for anyone looking to work in this industry, and there’s no shortage of jobs out there.

  1. Exciting workplaces

Have you ever visited a tourist attraction or taken a tour and thought the people working there have the best jobs ever?

Whether it’s a bungee operator, a tour guide, or a flight attendant, there are so many incredible jobs available in travel and tourism.

Just take a look at some of our student success stories to see what kind of jobs our recent graduates have been doing!

  1. A fast growing industry

Tourism is growing incredibly quickly, picking up steam again after the slow down over the pandemic. In fact, it’s one of the fastest growing industries on the planet, along with financial services and information & communication.

For those entering the workforce right now, that means your career could grow right along with the industry itself.

  1. See the world

Kiwis are known for their love of travel, with many of us heading away on OEs and exchanges in order to see more of the world.

Working in travel and tourism can be a fantastic way to explore more of the world. Here are just five of our recent graduates who are all overseas right now on incredible international exchanges following their studies.

Who knows where they might go next – and you could follow them!

  1. Because you can get started right now!

Can’t wait to get started on an exciting career? ITC is enrolling right now, and you can either join a class that has just recently started (it’s not too late!), or begin next week on March 11 for the next New Zealand Certificate in Tourism with a strand in Tourism and Travel Level 3 (limited spots available).

Alternatively, you can sign up and get started any time you like with our Study From Home option, which lets you study from the comfort of your own home anywhere in New Zealand!

Get in touch with our friendly team today to find out how you can get started in this exciting industry.
