The International Travel College of New Zealand (ITC) is lending a hand to those in need this festive season.

Instead of enjoying a large staff Christmas party, employees at the college voted to donate $5,000 to the Auckland City Mission – a generous show of support for deserving families in the local community.

“We asked the ITC team if they would prefer to have a big Christmas do or if they wanted to donate the money we’d usually spend to charity and have a smaller celebration,” says ITC Marketing Director Claire Huxley.

“We’re proud to say 98 per cent of the team voted for a smaller Christmas party, which allowed us to make a sizeable donation to the Auckland City Mission.”

Fundraising Team Leader at the Mission, Alexis Sawyers, visited ITC last week to accept the generous donation and personally thank the Directors for their support.

“We are delighted that ITC are supporting the Mission this Christmas. It is incredibly kind of the team and will make such a difference to our work at our busiest time of year,” Alexis said.

ITC students are also getting into the spirit of giving by donating non-perishable food to the Mission, as well as Christmas gifts to Totara Hospice.

Claire hopes this marks the beginning of a new ITC Christmas tradition.

“For ITC, Christmas should always be about giving and helping others,” she said.

Claire is definitely leading by example; she hosted a BBQ at her home in place of the Christmas party. Although the event was much smaller than previous ITC functions, it was just as enjoyable – if not more so thanks to the feel-good-factor of having donated to charity.

“I had a wonderful time at the Christmas BBQ,” says International Marketing Manager Lesley Brough.

“It was lovely to celebrate knowing that the money was going to a really great cause and will be helping a number of people struggling during the holiday season.”

The Auckland City Mission is still accepting donations for its Christmas Appeal. If you would like to show your support for this wonderful organisation, please visit www.becomesomeonesangel.co.nz.
