March Diploma & International Diploma classes loving ITC!

Kia Ora!

March has been an exciting month with two new courses starting, our 1 year Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management and our 2 year Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management program.  We have some lovely international students on these courses and they are quickly getting to know their fellow kiwi students and their way around Auckland city.

Our first student event for 2010, The Amazing Race was a huge success with teams of students racing around downtown Auckland solving clues and tasks exactly like the TV show!  All the students had to arrange costumes and some even went so far as to paint themselves blue (they were Smurf’s)!  Great prizes, donated to us by companies in the travel & tourism sector added to the fun and competition.  Our next student event is for Easter and as a surprise I will be dressing up as an Easter Bunny!  If you’re lucky you may see a photo of me in the outfit, (oh no!).

We have another intake for our 2 year program coming up very quickly on the 17th May (and another on the 05th July) so if you have any student’s super keen to get started as soon as possible then please email me.  The team at ITC are here to help and answer any questions you or a student may have about our courses or living in Auckland.  Potential students can also chat directly to current and past ITC students on our Facebook & BEBO page; they can also see all of our latest event photos.  The 2 year program is an exciting course with lots of qualifications, is very good value for money and includes a full first year of practical industry training and the second year is focused on management papers.  This qualification has it all!

2011 will be a big year for Auckland as it will be hosting the Rugby World Cup and with over 4 BILLION people tuning in to watch the tournament, all eyes will be on us!  This major event will also bring ten’s of thousands of visitors to NZ eager to see all it has to offer.  Many of our current and past students will be involved with many aspects of the visitors stay, from hotels, to events, car rentals, tour operator and guiding, booking domestic travel, tourist information right through to flight attending and working at the airport!  If you have students who are interested in the travel & tourism industry then 2010 is the time to come to NZ to start training!

We have two more intakes for our 1 year Diploma in Tourism & Travel Management course in 2010; the start dates are 19th July and 11th October.  This 48 week course provides graduates with skills and knowledge to prepare them for a general management career and covers topics such as business law, legislation & employment law, management skills, recruitment, marketing, finances etc.  In addition to this students also gain the IATA/UFTAA Foundation Diploma, an internationally recognised qualification in airfares & ticketing.

And don't forget, currently students studying a Diploma course in NZ are entitled to work up to 20 hours part time and when they successfully complete their course they can apply for a one year work permit!  Auckland is a great place to study and ITC is a multiple award winning college with an exceptional reputation in the Airline, Travel and Tourism training.

If you have any questions about our courses then don't hesitate to contact me directly: lesley@itc.co.nz

We look forward to hearing from you soon and welcoming your students to Auckland and ITC!

Awards news!!

International Travel College of New Zealand (ITC) is a finalist in three categories of the 2009 Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards.

Finalists were announced at a function at Villa Maria Estate on 29 July. ITC staff were thrilled to find out that ITC is a finalist in the Excellence in Innovation & Strategy Award (sponsored by Cogita), the Excellence in Service Delivery Award (sponsored by Prince & Partners), and the Excellence in Tourism Award (sponsored by Telstra Events Centre).

“This is a fantastic achievement,” said Marketing Manger Claire Huxley, “It acknowledges the hard work of our staff and students and the great relationships we have developed with industry employers and stakeholders who work with us and support us.”

Despite the recession there continues to be ongoing growth in the tourism industry. And a national skill shortage means there is big demand for travel and tourism graduates.

ITC works hard to ensure its students gain valuable industry experience while they study. Students often work at large events in the Auckland area, giving them vital opportunities to learn in a real-world environment. Earlier this year ITC took that one step further, opening the Airport Training Centre at the Botany Campus. The incredible new facility convincingly simulates an airport environment incorporating check in, customs, a gate lounge and an aircraft cabin for training in all aspects of in-flight service.

Manukau City Council and Westpac are the major sponsors of these awards, which are delivered on behalf of the council by Enterprising Manukau. The winners will be announced at a glamorous black-tie gala dinner on 18 September. Wish us luck!

Well done Sonia!

ITC students having been particpating in the third phase of qualitative research that JWT Education were doing with Education New Zealand research on market opportunities in India for New Zealand education providers.

The focus was on Indian students who are planning on completing qualifications at universities, institutes of technology, and polytechnics and PTEs in 2009. This quantitative component of the research involved inviting Indian students who are currently studying in all regions of New Zealand to complete an online questionnaire. As part of the survey $500 was offered to one lucky student for taking part, and Sonia (an ITC student pictured bottom right) was the lucky recipent! Well done Sonia, and a big thank you to all the students who took part in this survey.

We will be holding regular international student lunches, so we will post some photos on here soon!! Also if you are a Facebook user, we have a fan page which has photos, videos, student interviews, events, etc. If you or your students would like to join, just click on the Facebook logo on the right hand side of this page and be a fan, we would love you to be on there too!!

If we can help with anything in the newsletter, or anything else to help you market ITC, please let me know.

Kind regards

Claire, Lesley, Michelle, Ma'ata & Sarndra
